The Country Mourns Following Tragic Nippon Dynawave Industrial Disaster

LONGVIEW, Wash. — May 26, 2026

The community was forever changed on the morning of May 26 when a catastrophic industrial accident occurred at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging mill along the Columbia River in Longview, Washington.

At approximately 7:15 a.m., a massive storage tank containing "white liquor" — a highly caustic chemical solution used in the paper-making process — ruptured and collapsed, releasing hundreds of thousands of gallons of hazardous material throughout the facility.

Emergency responders from across the region rushed to the scene as workers were injured, trapped, or reported missing. Initial reports confirmed one fatality, multiple injuries, and nine missing employees.

As recovery efforts continued over the following days, officials confirmed that 11 workers ultimately lost their lives, making the tragedy one of the deadliest industrial disasters in modern Washington state history.

The incident occurred during a shift change and involved a tank that was approximately 60 percent full of white liquor, a chemical mixture containing sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfide. The hazardous conditions created by the release complicated rescue and recovery efforts, requiring specialized hazardous-materials teams and extensive safety precautions.

In the days following the disaster, Longview residents gathered for vigils, memorials, and community support events to honor the victims and support their families. Flags throughout the area were lowered to half-staff as the city grieved alongside mill workers, first responders, and loved ones affected by the tragedy.

Federal and state agencies, including the U.S. Chemical Safety Board, launched investigations into the cause of the tank failure. As of early June, officials have stated that it remains too soon to determine exactly what caused the rupture, and investigators continue examining the site and reviewing safety records.

For generations, the mills have been a cornerstone of Longview's identity and economy. The loss of so many workers has deeply impacted families, coworkers, and the entire community.

As investigations continue, Longview remains united in mourning, remembrance, and support for those affected by this heartbreaking event.
